This Poplar Hawk Moth was spotted near the visitor centre during summer 2008. Rainton Farm and Cream o' Galloway are a wonderful haven for wildlife. 830 acres of farmland has been managed organically since 2001 which means no artificial pesticides are applied to the land, hugely benefiting wildlife.
Tens of thousands of native trees have been planted in recent years, and three new ponds created on over 80 acres of the farm from which grazing animals have been excluded. The nature trails allow you to explore these areas, including a mature wooded glen where some of the more elusive animals such as red squirrels can sometimes be spotted.
In nature, every living thing depends on something else, it's like a chain. Now that we don't spray weed killers on the farm land, we have more wildflowers. More flowers of different kinds provides more food for insects which in turn provide more food for birds.
We've been recording the wildlife we've spotted at Cream o' Galloway for a few years now and send our records to the Environmental Resources Centre in Dumfries.
We're really keen to know what you see when you're out exploring our trails and would love to hear from you, particularly if you've taken some photos that we might use on our website. Send an email to

Photo competition
Are you good at wildlife photography? We ran a very successful photo competition in 2007 for the first time and intend to continue this as an annual event. If you've taken a great photo at Cream o' Galloway, whether it's of wildlife, the nature trails, someone enjoying an ice cream sundae, or even someone on the Flying Fox, and you're happy for the picture to be used on our website or other promotional material, then please send you photo in by email. At the end of the year, we'll get in touch with the winners and send vouchers for free ice creams next time you visit!
